New York Knicks cruise past New Orleans Hornets; Move to 8-1 record – NBA Recap
The New York Knicks continued their winning ways on Tuesday night when they cruised past the New Orleans Hornets at home for a comfortable 102-80 victory, with the Hornets playing without this year’s number 1 draft pick Anthony Davis. The Knicks took control of the game in the third period by outscoring the Hornets 30-16, and held on the lead till the end of the game to secure their 8th win in 9 games so far in the season. Carmelo Anthony once again led the Knicks in scoring with 29 points and 6 rebounds, going 12 of 22 from the field. Raymond Felton added 15 points and 6 assists, going 5 of 6 from three point range. Ryan Anderson was the top scorer for the Hornets, finishing with 15 points and 8 rebounds.
Both teams started the game well, with the Hornets taking an early 10-8 lead through a three pointer by Austin Rivers. The Knicks replied with an 8-0 to take a 16-10 lead, but the Hornets stayed close behind with a three pointer by Anderson to trail 13-16. Anthony took over in the final minutes of the period, scoring seven straight points for the Knicks, and Steve Novak followed with a three pointer to close the period and put the Knicks up 29-17 as the Hornets failed to score in the final 2:53 of the period.
Back to back three pointers by Brian Roberts opened the scoring for the Hornets in the second quarter, and he later added another three which was followed by two three pointers by Anderson as the Hornets started with a 19-5 run to take a 36-34 lead. The Knicks re-took the lead with a three pointer by Felton, and he scored a three later in the period followed by a jump shot by Anthony and another three by Felton as the Knicks were once again cruising with a 51-42 lead. The Hornets trailed 48-53 at the halftime break.
A jump shot by Anthony followed by a three pointer by Ronnie Brewer early in the third period put the Knicks up 63-52, and J.R. Smith nailed a three pointer later on which was followed by another jump shot by Anthony to have the Knicks cruising with a 74-58 lead. James White scored a three pointer near the end of the period and Rasheed Wallace then a fade away jumper as the final field goal in the period for the Knicks. New York led 83-64 heading into the final period.
The Knicks started the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run, and the game was virtually won at that point. Novak’s three pointer made the lead 100-76, and the Knicks eventually won 102-80.
J.R Smith had 15 points and 5 rebounds for the Knicks where Tyson Chandler finished with 7 points and 12 rebounds. Austin Rivers added 14 points for the Hornets, Roberts finished with 13 points off the bench and Robin Lopez had 11 points and 5 rebounds. The Knicks shot 14 of 36 from three point range and outscored the Hornets 49-36 in rebounds.
