New York Knicks defeat Philadelphia 76ers at home to secure 2nd consecutive victory – NBA Recap
The New York Knicks kept the momentum alive at the start of the season, winning their second consecutive game by defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 100-84 at the Madison Square Garden here on Sunday night.
The Knicks outscored Philadelphia for all the quarters except for the third, and eventually cruised to a comfortable victory. Carmelo Anthony was the leading scorer for the Knicks on the night, scoring 27 points and 5 rebounds while going 10 of 18 from the field. Jrue Holiday scored 27 points and 7 assists for the Sixers, going 11 of 18 from the field including a 5 of 6 shooting from the three point line.
New York took the lead early on in the game, and three pointer by Ronnie Brewer put them up 12-6 in the early minutes. Carmelo Anthony then nailed a three pointer to put the Knicks up 17-10, and five back to back points by Raymond Felton ensured they kept their lead alive at 24-16 with a little under three minutes left in the period. The Sixers attempted to cut into the Knicks lead, but a three pointer by Steve Novak put the Knicks up 30-23, and they finished the period leading 31-25.
New York kept the momentum alive in the second period, starting with an 8-4 run to extend their lead to 39-29. A three pointer by Novak later in the period had the Knicks up 42-31, but the Sixers scored the next six points to keep them within striking distance of New York. J.R. Smith then scored another three for New York to put them back up 49-39, and the Knicks went into the halftime break with a comfortable 57-44 lead.
Anthony opened the scoring for the Knicks in the third period and scored two straight jumps shots for the team to extend their lead to 61-46, and Jason Kidd later nailed a three pointer which was followed by a three point play by Kurt Thomas to give the Knicks a 71-55 lead. The Knicks finished the period leading 75-66.
Back to back three pointers by Smith opened the scoring for New York in the final period and extended their lead back to 81-66. Smith scored a three pointer again for New York with 8:23 left in the game to give the Knicks an 86-69 lead. The Knicks carried their lead through to the end of the game and eventually won 100-84.
Smith finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds for the night, going 8 of 15 from the field including a 4 of 5 shooting performance form three point range. Jason Kidd finished with 12 points and 6 assists, while Raymond Felton added 11 points. Thaddeus Young had 16 points and 6 rebounds for Philadelphia, while Evan Turner finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
New York shot 50.6 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from three point range, while the Sixers went 43 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from three point range. New York had 12 steals compared to 8 for Philadelphia, and committed 4 fewer turnovers at 14.
