New York Knicks hire Los Angeles Lakers radio announcer Spero Dedes: NBA News
New York Knicks have finally made it official that they have hired former Los Angeles Lakers radio announcer Spero Dedes, a month after a formal meeting was held in this regard.
According to the sources, Dedes was slated to do the play by play announcement for the New York Knicks in the start of July. However the official deceleration was delayed as a result of Spero’ arrest in Hampton for drunken driving.
On Thursday, New York Knicks confirmed the appointment of Dedes who will now join the Madison Square Garden Network.
MSG’s executive vice president Dan Ronayne was thrilled to have one of the top radio announcers on his network.
“Spero is one of the top play-by-play announcers in the country, and we’re excited that he is returning home to New York and joining MSG Networks,” Ronayne said.
Spero spend the last six seasons at the Los Angeles Lakers. Due to his growing fame, Dedes was considered the man to replace Joel Meyers, whose contract was not renewed this year by the Lakers. However, the franchise took a different
step and hired the veteran Bill Macdonald for the Television play by play announcement.
Dedes has a lot of memories associated with his new job area New York. Spero used to call play by play for the college basketball and football games at the Yes Network. He also served as the radio announcer for the New Jersey Nets
and hosted pre-game and post-game shows for the team.
Dedes was extremely excited to finally get the chance of becoming New York Knicks announcer, an opportunity about which, he said he had dreamed as a broadcast student in Fordham.
"I can remember walking into [Madison Square] Garden for my first Knicks game as a teenager and feeling the magic of the place. I've been in love with this franchise ever since. When I was a broadcast student at Fordham all I
dreamt about was what it would feel like to be a Knicks announcer and now it's become reality. Dedes said.
While Dedes was feeling very humbled to join the broadcast team of New York which will enable him to come close to his family, Spero was also very grateful to his former employer Los Angeles Lakers where he learned so many things
which will help him in the future.
“I’m forever grateful to the Lakers organization for my time spent there."
