New York Knicks stop San Antonio Spurs' 7-game winning streak with a 100-83 rout: NBA Recap
Before the Spurs game, Mike Woodson had asked New York Knicks to tighten up their defence. The team listened to their coach well as they snapped a 2 game skid with a convincing 100-83 victory over the red hot San Antonio Spurs
here at the Madison Square Garden Thursday night.
Carmelo Anthony added 23 points and 8 rebounds for the winning cause. Tyson Chandler posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while J.R. Smith came off the bench to add 20 points. Knicks shot 47.6 percent from the
field while the Spurs struggled on the night as they shot a partly 36.4 percent from the floor.
"That's their scheme, to try to take me out of the game," Anthony said. "Just a matter of us making shots when we swing the ball, and Novak made shots, J.R. kept his streak alive of playing good basketball, Pablo came in and led
our team from the point guard position. Everybody contributed in their own way."
The Knicks controlled the star duo of Tim Duncan and Tony Parker as they struggled to make their shots. Tim Duncan had 11 points as he went 4 of 8 from the floor, while Tony Parker added 11 points and 6 assists as he went 5 of
11 from the field. The Spurs were dominated in the paint; the Knicks outscored the Spurs 36-12 in the paint.
Spurs got off to a good start to the game and they were up 10-7 when Jason Kidd nailed a three pointer to tie the score. The Knicks kept up the scoring from behind the arc and were leading 22-19 by the end of the period.
Chris Copeland nailed a three pointer early in the second period to push the Knicks lead to 30-21. Knicks started pulling ahead before the Spurs came back later in the quarter to reduce the gap down to 40-42 at halftime.
Knicks started pulling ahead in the second half but the Spurs kept it close for the most part of third period. A 10 nil spurt at the close of the third period put the Knicks in charge as they started racing ahead. Jason Smith sealed
the deal for the Knicks with a reverse alley oop dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. Steve Novak fired one from behind the arc as the Knicks opened up a 23 point lead with 5:13 left in the regulation. New York were in cruise control mode from that stage
as they cruised to a 100-83 win eventually.
