On Sunday, three games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here are the highlights of the games:
New York Liberty 88 – Tulsa Shock 57
Cappie Pondexter scored a game-high 18 points, on a 6 for 11 shooting from the field, as New York Liberty beat the WNBA-worse Tulsa Shock 88-57 at Prudential Center. It was the fourth consecutive defeat for Tulsa under interim
coach Teresa Edwards, who replaced Nolan Richardson nine days back.
New York guard forward Essence Carson came off the bench with 17 points on an 8 for 11 shooting from the floor, Kia Vaughn contributed 15 points and eight rebounds while Plenette Pierson had 12 points and four rebounds for Liberty,
who have won five of their last six games.
Tiffany Jackson led Tulsa with 17 points and a game best 11 rebounds while Liz Cambage and Doneeka Hodges scored 11 points each in the ninth consecutive defeat for Shock.
New York opened the first quarter on a 7-2 run and carried a 24-15 lead into the second. Liberty limited Tulsa to 18 points in the second quarter and stretched their lead to 15 points, 48-33, at halftime. They then put the game
to bed in the third quarter by outscoring the visiting team 21-6. Shock never came close after that.
Liberty coach John Whisenant said at the end of the game, "We played with more energy, our feet were alive and we did not have our mud boots on," "I told the team I do not have a secret to unlock your energy box but when you play
with energy and determination we are a sound, pretty good team.”
Connecticut Sun 76 – Indiana Fever 71
At Mohegan Sun Arena, Danielle McCray racked up a career-high 22 points to marshal Connecticut Sun past the WNBA-leading Indiana Fever 76-71. This was Connecticut’s second victory in a row.
McCray, who was selected seventh overall in the 2010 WNBA Draft hit 7 for 10 from the floor, including a fantastic 6 for 8 from the three-point range.
Tina Charles recorded a double-double with a team-high 14 rebounds and 18 points while Renee Montgomery tallied 10 points for Sun, who are the only team in the Eastern Conference undefeated at home so far in this season, 6-0.
