New York Liberty, Connecticut Sun and Washington Mystics win – WNBA Roundup July 17, 2011: Part 2
On the night, Connecticut Sun shot 43.5 percent from the floor and 68.2 percent from the line while Indiana Fever shot 42.6 percent from the field and 57.1 from free throw line.
Sun trailed by one-point at the end of the first quarter, but they came out strong in the second period and outplayed the visiting team 24-13, taking a 10-point advantage, 42-32, at halftime.
Indiana opened the third quarter on an 18-8 run and tied the game at 50 with five minutes to go in the quarter. The top scorer of the night, Danielle McCray, then hit a three pointer and Tina Charles followed with a jumper to put
Connecticut ahead by five points, 55-50. Fever however limited Connecticut to just three points in the last three minutes of the third period and showed only three down, 58-55, heading into the fourth frame.
In the fourth quarter, Indiana kept on haunting the Sun and with 28 remaining in the game, they made it a two-point contest, 73-71. However, Kalana Greene and Kara Lawson scored 3 of 4 free throws in the closing seconds to seal
the victory.
Washington Mystics 89 – Los Angeles Sparks 85
At Staples Center, Matee Ajavon punctuated a game-high 29 points as the Washington Mystics snapped their five-game losing streak with an 89-85 overtime victory over Los Angeles Sparks.
Crystal Langhorne finished with 24 points, game high 14 rebounds and five assists. Marissa Coleman also added 10 points and nine rebounds in the victory.
Kristi Toliver scored a team-high 21 points, pinning 8 of 8 free throws, and dished out seven assists to lead the Sparks. Jantel Lavender came off the bench with 13 points and three rebounds while Tina Thompson chipped in with
11 points. The Mystics shot 50.7 percent from the field and limited the Sparks to just 43.3 percent.
Los Angeles held a 10-4 lead early in the first quarter and pushed their advantage to 13 points, 20-7, with 03:10 to go in the opening period. Mystics responded with four consecutive points and trimmed the deficit to nine, 20-11,
but the Sparks went on a 7-2 run in the closing minutes of the quarter to take a 27-13 lead into the second.
Los Angeles continued to dominate and outscored the hosts 20-12 in the second quarter, stretching their lead to 47-25 at halftime.
Trailing by 12 points at the end of first half, the Mystics made a strong comeback. Washington limited the Sparks to 12 points in the third quarter and 18 points in the fourth and tied the game 77 to force overtime. They then scored
the first five points of the O.T. to take an 82-77 lead and never trailed again.
