New York Liberty, Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks win - WNBA Roundup August 18, 2011
Three games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Thursday, August 18, 2011. Here is a brief review of the games:
New York Liberty 84 – Connecticut Sun 81
At Prudential Center, Cappie Pondexter punctuated 27 points, including a go-ahead jumper with 24 seconds to go, as New York Liberty beat Connecticut Sun 84-81 in overtime for their second consecutive victory.
Essence Carson added 19 points, eight rebounds, five steals three assists while Kia Vaughn had 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in the victory.
Tina Charles led Connecticut with 29 points, 14 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Renee Montgomery posted 16 points and five assists while Asjha Jones ended with 11 rebounds and 10 points in the loss. Kara Lawson also came
off the bench with 10 points for Connecticut, who saw their two-game winning streak halted.
Charles scored 17 of her points in the first half and Connecticut held a 40-39 lead at halftime. The Sun outscored New York 27-13 in the third quarter and stretched their lead to 67-52. The Liberty held a 74-71 lead with 50 seconds
to go in the fourth quarter before Lawson hit a three pointer and tied the game at 74, sending it into overtime.
Connecticut got off to a good start in O.T. and held an 80-76 but New York then scored five consecutive and went ahead 81-80. Pondexter responded with jumper to put Liberty ahead by one and Carson hit a pair of free throws in the
last second to seal the victory.
Minnesota Lynx 81 – Washington Mystics 62
Seimone Augustus chipped in with a game high 18 points as Minnesota Lynx defeated Washington Mystics 81-62 at Verizon Center, snapping their three-game losing streak against Mystics.
Maya Moore totalled 14 points, four steals and four rebounds while Rebekkah Brunson had with 13 points and six rebounds for Minnesota. Lindsay Whalen posted 11 points, seven assists and three rebounds in the victory.
Matee Ajavon headed the Mystics with 15 points. Marissa Coleman had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals while Crystal Langhorne contributed 11 points and five rebounds in the third consecutive defeat for the slumping Mystics.
Minnesota carried a 39-29 lead into the locker room and stretched it to 60-49 at the end of third period. The Lynx maintained their lead in the fourth quarter and walked away with 19th victory of this season.
Los Angeles Sparks 75 – Indiana Fever 70
Ebony Hoffman had 21 points, seven rebounds and two assists as Los Angeles Sparks snapped three-game winning streak of Indiana Fever with a 75-70 victory at Staples Center.
Candace Parker totalled 18 points, six rebounds and five assists in the victory.
Erin Phillips led Fever with 16 points on a 6 for 12 shooting from the field. Tamika Catchings scored 16 points and Tangela Smith added 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists in the defeat.
Five different players scored for Indiana in the first quarter as they held a 21-16 lead at the end of the period. The Sparks limited Fever to just nine points in the second quarter and converted the deficit into a point lead at
intermission. Both teams scored 24 points each in the third quarter and Los Angeles their point lead.
Indiana turned it on in the fourth quarter and carried a 66-62 advantage with 04:57 to go in the game. However, the Sparks scored the next eight points of the quarter and did not trail down the stretch.
