New York Liberty and Chicago Sky win - WNBA Roundup July 13, 2011: Part 1
On Wednesday night, four games took place in Women National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here is a brief review of the games:
New York Liberty 91 – Atlanta Dream 69
Six Liberty players reached double figures as New York beat the Atlanta Dream 91-69 at Prudential Center for their fourth straight victory.
Nicole Powell scored a game-high 20 points, including 5-of-5 from downtown, and pulled down seven rebounds. Kia Vaughn contributed 14 points and four rebounds while Leilani Mitchell had 12 points and five assists in the victory.
Cappie Pondexter and Quanitra Hollingsworth contributed 10 points and six rebounds apiece for New York, who have won six of their previous seven games.
Angel McCoughtry led Dream with 17 points, three rebounds and two steals while Coco Miller tallied 15 points. Armintie Price punctuated 12 points in the second consecutive loss of Atlanta.
Liberty shot 45.7 percent (32 for 70) from the field and limited Dream to just 40.6 percent (28 for 69).
Powell scored 14 of her points in the first half as New York held a 54-37 lead at halftime. Liberty outscored Atlanta 23-16 in the third quarter and stretched their lead to 24 points, 77-53 by its end.
Atlanta managed to cut the deficit to 12 points, 77-65, with 04:15 to go in the fourth quarter. However, Vaughn then pinned four consecutive free throws and Powell went for a hook shot to put the game out of Dream’s reach.
Chicago Sky 72 - Tulsa Shock 54
Sylvia Fowles had a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds as Chicago Sky knocked out the slumping Tulsa Shock 72-54 at Allstate Arena. It was Tulsa’s seventh consecutive road defeat.
Fowles, who is WNBA’s scoring leader, hit 8 for 17 from the floor and 5 for 6 from the line on the night. Epiphanny Prince notched up 11 points, six assists five steals and four rebounds in Chicago’s third straight victory at home.
Tamera Young also had 10 points and four rebounds in the victory.
Jennifer Lacy led Shock with 13 points. Andrea Riley racked up 12 points while Tiffany Jackson grabbed 11 rebounds for the league’s worse Tulsa.
Sky opened the game with an 8-0 run and held a 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored 22 points each in the second quarter as Chicago maintained its 12-point lead, 43-31, at halftime.
In the third quarter, Tulsa trimmed the deficit to five, 47-42, before Sky went on a 9-2 run in the closing minutes to take a 55-44 into the last quarter. Tulsa did not get any closer than 15 points in the fourth.
