New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun win – WNBA Roundup July 01, 2011 (Part 1)
On Friday night, three games took place in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here is a brief recap of these games.
New York Liberty 81 - San Antonio Silver Stars 75
Cappie Pondexter scored a team-high 19 points and dished out five assists as New York Liberty handed the San Antonio Silver Stars their first road victory of the season with a 81-75 victory at the Prudential Center.
Plenette Pierson scored 14 points, including 10 in the last four minutes of the game and grabbed five rebounds for Liberty.
Pierson, who shot a perfect 6-on-6 from the charity stripe, expressed her satisfaction on finally stepping it up this season. "I'm a veteran in this league. I have been there, done that many times before," "It's not how you play
the entire game, it is how you finish. I knew in order to help my team get a win I had to come in there and probably play big minutes and make good baskets. My teammates found me in great positions."
Nicole Powell added 13 points and four rebounds while Kia Vaughn totalled 11 points and seven rebounds in New York’s second consecutive victory at Prudential Center - their home for the next three seasons.
Danielle Adams once again led the Silver Stars with 19 points and four rebounds. Becky Hammon and Sophia Young scored 16 points apiece while Young also grabbed eight rebounds for San Antonio, who saw their three-game winning streak
snapped.
Liberty held a 24-20 lead after the first quarter and maintained a five-point advantage, 39-34, at halftime. San Antonio however fought hard and converted the deficit into a one-point lead, 53-52, at the end of third quarter. They
trailed by 71-68 with 03:39 to go in the fourth quarter but Hammon hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 71. However, New York responded with a 10-4 run down the stretch to sprint to their fifth victory this season.
Connecticut Sun 75 – Seattle Storm 70
Tina Charles recorded a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds as Connecticut Sun beat Seattle Storm 75-70 at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Kara Lawson scored 16 points, including three on five treys, dished out seven assists and grabbed four rebounds while Renee Montgomery ended with 11 points and eight assists in the second straight victory of Connecticut.
Swin Cash chipped in with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds for Seattle. Camille Little and Lecoe Willingham also added 10 apiece points for Storm, who saw who saw their two-game winning streak snapped. Connecticut limited
the Storm to just 14.3 percent shooting from the three-point range and 41.3 percent from the field.
