New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx win - WNBA Roundup August 4, 2011
Just two games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Thursday, August 4, 2011. Here is a brief review of the two games:
New York Liberty vs. Chicago Sky
The New York Liberty crushed Chicago Sky 59-49 at Prudential Center for their second consecutive win, limiting the Sky to a WNBA-record one point in the final period. It was second straight loss for Chicago.
Cappie Pondexter scored 15 points, dished out three assists and stole the ball twice to lead New York while Nicole Powell recorded a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds and 13 points in the victory. Essence Carson came off
the bench with 11 points and three assists for Liberty, who have won four of their previous six games.
Sylvia Fowles led the Silver Stars with 11 points on a 5 for 8 shooting from the field. Fowles also added eight rebounds and two steals in the loss. Liberty shot 37.5 percent (24 for 64) from the field and limited the visiting
team to just 34 percent (18 for 53). Sky committed 22 turnovers as compared to 15 by New York.
Chicago made a solid start and held an eight-point lead after first quarter. Liberty limited the Sky to just eight points in the second quarter and trimmed their deficit to three, 26-23, at halftime. They then pushed their lead
to five points, 48-43, at the end of third quarter.
Things however took a frantic turn in the fourth quarter. New York came out with a defensive strategy choked the Chicago outfit 16-1 to seal the victory.
Minnesota Lynx 62 - San Antonio Silver Stars 60
At Target Center, Taj McWilliams-Franklin nailed a jumper from 18 feet out with just one second remaining as Minnesota Lynx squeaked past the San Antonio Silver Stars 62-60. This was the eighth consecutive victory for the Lynx,
who lead both the conferences of WNBA.
McWilliams-Franklin ended the game with 18 points on a 5 for 10 shooting from the field and 8 for 10 from free throw line. The 40-year-old veteran also grabbed seven rebounds in the victory. Candice Wiggins came off the bench and
scored all of her 15 points on a 50 percent shooting from downtown. Seimone Augustus totalled 10 points, three rebounds and two blocks while Rebekkah Brunson pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds for Minnesota.
Sophia Young led the Silver Stars with 18 points, hitting 6 for 15 from the field and 6 for 9 from free throw line, and 13 rebounds in more than 35 minutes of action. Becky Hammon had 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, two
steals and two blocks in the third straight loss for the Silver Stars while Jia Perkins contributed 11 points and four rebounds.
Young scored 13 of her points in the first half as San Antonio held a 23-17 advantage at halftime. Trailing by six points at interval, Minnesota outplayed the visiting team 26-17 in the third quarter to carry a 43-40 lead. The
score was tied at 60 with just 11 ticks to go in the fourth quarter before McWilliams-Franklin hit a jumper in the closing second to seal the victory for her team.
