New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury win - WNBA Roundup July 10, 2011
On Sunday night, two games took place in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).Here is a brief review of the both games:
New York Liberty 80 – Chicago Sky 73
Essence Carson rejoined the line-up after missing the last two games with a traumatic iritis of the right eye and scored 18 points as New York Liberty defeated the Chicago Sky 80-73 at Prudential Center.
Cappie Pondexter also added 18 points, dished out four assists and had three steals in the victory. Plenette Pierson hit 5 for 10 from the floor to contribute 13 points while Quanitra Hollingsworth came off the bench with 11 points
for in New York’s third consecutive victory. Nicole Powell totalled 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds and four assists for Liberty, who have won five of their previous six games. Kia Vaughn also recorded 10 points and grabbed five rebounds for the winners.
Sylvia Fowles and Courtney Vandersloot led Chicago with 14 points each. Michelle Snow and Erin Thorn each added 11 points and four rebounds.
Chicago carried a 17-8 lead with 04:36 to go in the first quarter but New York scored the next six points to cut down the deficit to three. Sky however turned it on and went on a 10-0 run, taking a 27-14 lead at the end of the
opening period. Liberty played comparatively better in the second quarter and trimmed the margin to 11-point, 49-38, at halftime.
They continued to stay at par with Chicago and Carson made a three point play with 01:50 to go in the third quarter and made it a three-point contest. Vandersloot responded with a three-pointer and put the Sky ahead by 60-54, heading
into the fourth.
Liberty continued to make inroads in the fourth and Carson’s jumper with 02:46 left on the clock gave New York one-point advantage, 70-69. Chicago then scored four unanswered points and went ahead by 73-70. However, Pondexter and
Carson hit two 3-pointers put the game out of Chicago’s reach.
Phoenix Mercury 102 – Tulsa Shock 63
Playing at the US Airways Center, seven Phoenix players reached double figures as Mercury trounced the Tulsa Shock 102-63 in Teresa Edwards' debut as interim coach.
Penny Taylor recorded a team-high 18 points while DeWanna Bonner had 13 points, four rebounds and two steals for Phoenix, which moved into first position in the Western Conference in terms of percentage points. Diana Taurasi, Candice
Dupree and Nakia Sanford scored 12 points each in Mercury’s third consecutive victory. Kara Braxton and Marie Ferdinand-Harris chipped in with 10 points apiece in the victory.
Tiffany Jackson led Shock with a game best with 19 points and two steals. Liz Cambage tallied 15 points while Kayla Pedersen ended with 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in the sixth straight loss
for Tulsa.
Taylor scored 16 of her points in the first half of the game as Phoenix held a 32-point lead, 60-28, at halftime. Mercury maintained their dominance throughout the second half of the game to walk away with another impressive victory.
