New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury win: WNBA Roundup July 8, 2011
On Friday, July 8, two games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here are the highlights of the games:
New York Liberty 76 – San Antonio Silver Stars 73
Cappie Pondexter scored a game-high 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out seven assists and stole the ball four times as New York Liberty beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 76-73 for the second consecutive time at the AT&T
Center.
Plenette Pierson registered a double-double, including a game best 10 rebounds and 14 points. Pierson also blocked two shots and shot 6 for 8 from the field. Nicole Powell had 13 points, four boards, four assists and two steals
while Leilani Mitchell ended with 11 points and five assists in the victory. Kia Vaughn also added four rebounds and three steals in New York’s second consecutive road victory.
Becky Hammon led San Antonio with 18 points, four assists and three rebounds. Jia Perkins posted 13 points and four rebounds while Danielle Adams came off the bench with 12 points and four rebounds in the loss. Danielle Robinson
contributed 11 points while Sophia Young scored 10 points in San Antonio’s second straight home defeat.
Vaughn and Pondexter scored 10 of their points in the first half of the game as New York held a 37-31 lead at halftime. The Silver Stars made a comeback in the third quarter and tied the game at 49 with 03:03 to go in the quarter.
However, Liberty went on a 6-2 run to carry a 55-51 advantage into the last quarter.
Liberty continued to dominate in the fourth and Pierson’s lay-up with 03:45 to go gave them a 72-64 lead. San Antonio however scored the next six points to make it a two-point contest at 72-20 and send shivers in the Liberty camp.
Pierson responded for them though and canned four unanswered points to put the game away.
Phoenix Mercury 86 – Tulsa Shock 78
At BOK Center, Diana Taurasi scooped out a team-high 17 points as Phoenix Mercury cruised past the Tulsa Shock 86-78.
Penny Taylor had 16 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals while Kara Braxton tallied 11 points in Phoenix’s third consecutive win. DeWanna Bonner also had a double-double with 10 points and a game high 13 rebounds.
Liz Cambage led the slumping Tulsa with 19 points, five rebounds and two steals. Tiffany Jackson scored 15 points while Kayla Pedersen totalled 13 points and nine rebounds in Shock’s fifth consecutive defeat.
After a tight first quarter which Mercury clinched 23-22, Mercury controlled the game. At halftime, they were ahead by 46-39 and then outscored Shock 30-21, to stretch their lead to 16 points, 76-60 after three. Tulsa drew no closer
than six points in the entire fourth quarter as Phoenix walked away with the victory.
