New York Mets' Ike Davis looking to bypass ankle surgery – MLB News
New York Mets first baseman, Ike Davis is looking to avoid a micro fracture surgery on his left ankle. The operation could be conducted to repair a bone bruise on his ankle but the star player is opting against it. The player announced his decision on Tuesday,
September 6.
Davis claims that after a long rest in August he has resumed his workout regimen. There are no problems to report at the moment, according the infielder.
“Right now, all we can do is try to do the best thing for my career,” he said. “The best thing is not to have surgery right now. If it stays like this, I won’t have to. The last two weeks, I’ve been really pushing it, and it’s stayed pretty consistent. It
hasn’t gotten worse, like in the past.”
Davis seems confident and he hopes the team doctors will clear him after he meets with them in New York.
“It’s not 100 percent, but it’s at the point right now where I’m moving around pretty well and can do basically about everything, so, still a little tight and some things in there that maybe in more time, it might heal.”
The first baseman further explained why it was not the right to move for a surgery. He spoke his mind and clarified that he did not think it would help. Though the option still exists and can be pursued, there is no current need for it as things look good.
The decision comes at a time when the Mets cannot use Davis in active duty. A surgery will come with a six month period of recovery. There have been no setbacks, thus far, but if they do tend to crop up, they will add up to the time rendered on surgery recovery.
The first baseman sustained the injury on May 10 when he collided with fellow Mets’ player, David Wright, during a standard chase for a popup in Denver. Though the situation looked harmless at the time, Davis has been sidelined for almost four months.
Manager Terry Collins has been perplexed by the situation at hand and he wants the situation resolved before the 2012 season commences. Collins and Mets’ trainers have been keeping a keen eye on the star player. Davis plans to continue his workout regimen
for two more days before taking a month long rest to recuperate.
Before sustaining his left ankle injury, Ike Davis had a season batting average of .302. He managed to smash seven home-runs while driving in 25 runs. His slugging percentage was up by .543.
The Mets are four games ahead of the Washington Nationals in the National League and they are ranked third at the moment.
