New York Mets' manager Terry Collins announces six-man rotation for the season - MLB Update
The New York Mets’ manager Terry Collins has declared that he will be using the six-man rotation from now onward. While all the starting pitchers will see a change in the number of days they rest between the games, R.A. Dickey is an exception.
Collins believes that the main purpose of the six-man rotation is to allow Johan Santana and Matt Harvey more time so that the fatigue does not affect their performance. Meanwhile, Dickey will keep throwing as per the schedule, because the manager maintains
that the best of him can be enjoyed when he throws on a regular basis.
Dickey is among the candidates for winning the Cy Young Award this year. His knucklers have proven to be one of the most difficult pitches for the batters in the season. The complete games he has thrown in and the number of wins he has recorded have made
him the most logical pitcher when it comes to deciding the Cy Young winner.
In light of this, the schedule of the six-man rotation which has been introduced now has been designed in such a manner that Dickey will keep starting games at the current pace. One of the motivations behind keeping Dickey’s schedule intact may be the opportunity
that he will have now to strengthen his credentials for earning the award.
There is a possibility that Collins may have considered it unfair to limit Dickey keeping in view that doing so will have reduced his chances for winning the award.
Meanwhile, Harvey is indifferent to what the manager plans about him for throwing in the games. He is of the view that whenever he is asked to start games, he will do so without complaining.
“I really don’t have any say in any of it,” Harvey said. “Whenever they tell me to throw, I’ll throw and give it everything I have.”
Furthermore, Santana will be pleased now as his work-lead has been reduced. He will be looking to live up to the expectations of the management with his current schedule of starting games.
As the Mets play the upcoming games, it will be interesting to evaluate as to how the idea of six-man rotation works for the team.
