New York Mets’ David Wright all praise for Joey Votto – MLB News
Joey Votto on Tuesday, July 10, had his appearance in All-Star Game, representing the Cincinnati Reds in National League. The player had knee issues which had made it a little uncertain if he would be able to play the game.
However, as it eventually turned out, one of the best contemporary sluggers of the game came in the fifth inning to face the American League pitcher. Irrespective of his performance in the eagerly awaited big game, it was being there that attracted tremendous media attention.
Having signed a 10-year $225 million deal with the Reds this year, which in effect was the extension as he has been playing for the Reds for years, Votto continues to prove his effectiveness as a great player in the game.
That is what even the players of other teams frankly acknowledge. David Wright, the New York Mets’ third baseman is one of them out there. In his frank view, it is difficult to find a player with such impeccable qualities.
"It would be difficult to find a guy who has more of a plan and more of a sense of his swing and his approach than him," Wright said. "I think he's one of the best, if not the best, hitter in baseball. You see a guy that understands what he's capable of doing and the approach that he takes, and it's amazing to watch.”
What Wright says has inherent truth to it. For instance, a look at this year’s performance shows he has been remarkably consistent with .348 average in 83 games and an impressive .617 slugging percentage in 287 at-bats so far.
Wright said, “There are just no holes. If you're lucky enough to get him out once, you're not going to get him out the next time, and that's very, very rare."
It is not only this season that the team has seen his consistency. In the 700 games of his career, his batting average stands at .317 with .558 slugging percentage, manifesting – quite credibly and undeniably that he is by far one of the best sluggers to feature in Major League Baseball.
