New York Mets’ David Wright believes R.A. Dickey can sustain his success - MLB Update
Third baseman for New York Mets, David Wright has negated the impression that R.A. Dickey’s decline can start within a few years. He is fairly confident he can play at his full strength for a number of years.
One of the reasons why the Mets are unwilling to meet expectations of Dickey in the possible new deal is his age. The narrative in the organisation is that starting pitchers can hardly sustain their momentum when they get older.
Despite the fact that Dickey was splendid in the last season, the team is unable to develop a consensus within the organisation regarding his contract renewal.
The option of trading Dickey in exchange for some outfielders looks equally attractive to the Mets. Getting rid of someone who is prone to losing his strength next year is being seriously considered by the club.
Though the team wants Dickey back, but at a price which is far lower than what he is expecting. It is unaffordable for the team to sign him for something like $26 million for two-years.
Other than the trade and contract extension, there is another way the Mets can deal with Dickey. They can get him to play for New York during the 2013 Major League season under a $5 million inexpensive option that the club has exercised on him.
In this way, the cost of a new deal can be avoided by the team and automatically Dickey will become a free agent next year. After Dickey sits in the market in the upcoming offseason, the Mets can bid for him there and see if he can be hired by them.
Wright, while discussing Dickey, has acknowledged the limitations of the club about his contract extension.
“It’s a very, I guess, odd situation,” Wright said. “Obviously, you have a guy who just won the Cy Young Award, so you’d like him back. But you understand both sides of it, and I think R.A. understands both sides of it. I talked to him and he understands
where we’re at and it’s a compliment to him what we could bring back in a trade.”
As the offseason heads toward conclusion, there is an increasing perception among the fans that Dickey will most probably be traded.
Certainly, losing a Cy Young Award winner will be disheartening for the fans.
