New York Mets’ David Wright looking for $125 million contract extension, say sources-MLB Update
Reports suggest that New York Mets are preparing long term contract extension of their third baseman David Wright worth $100 million.
While the negotiations have yet to get underway, such reports to some extent reveal the intent of the organisation and tell as to how far they can go in making sure they keep Wright in the club for the years to come.
Ever since the season came to an end for the Mets, speculations are doing the rounds that Wright will be offered an extravagant deal in the offseason.
Earlier sources close to the team said that the Mets aim at clinching deal with Wright at the earliest. It may be the case that by the time World Series starts they have made the announcement in this regard, they added.
The reports are surfacing that suggest that Wright is looking for a contract worth $125 million as opposed to $100 million. He loves to stay in the organisation until retirement but at the same time he has not ruled out the possibility of testing free agency.
If his statements while the season was underway are anything to go by, he appears to be unsure as to where he will end up playing eventually.
The Mets confront extreme financial constraints and if they somehow offer Wright $100 million, it will prove that they definitely want to keep him in the club.
Wright on the other hand will be hinging his hopes on the incredible offensive numbers that he posted in the season. Based on them he will be fancying a blockbuster deal.
Going into the free agency and becoming part of the spotlight is always a dream come true scenario for a player. This means that resisting the temptation of free agency may not be possible for Wright if the Mets do not agree to his expectations.
In case the deal does not materialise, the Mets will have an option on Wright for 2013. They will decide then whether they should retain Wright for 2013 or get rid of him through a trade.
Losing Wright who has been the cornerstone of their success in the recently concluded regular season will be the last thing that the Mets want.
As General Manager Sandy Alderson time-and-again has unveiled his desire to see Wright playing for the upcoming years in the club, he will be disappointed if the deal does not take place despite his efforts.
Within few weeks, things may start demystifying and what both the parties are actually aiming for may become known.
The fans will be extremely curious about when the negotiations start and how Wright reacts to the possible offers that the Mets will be making to him.
It will be interesting to know as to where ultimately Wright goes and plays for the upcoming seasons.
