New York Mets’ Johan Santana out for the season as he suffers back tightness - MLB Update
Johan Santana sees an end to his expedition in the season after the MRI unveils lower back inflammation on Tuesday. Both manager Terry Collins and the General Manager Sandy Alderson believe that Santana will be throwing in the next season now and hope by
that time he will have worked out issues with his command and control.
Santana was supposed to become the most consistent winner for the team as the season started. While he began extremely well and put up splendid shows on a number of occasions, he struggled lately.
By giving up runs, he failed to bring wins for the team from the situations when he was expected to be playing a crucial role for New York. Afterwards, he suffered an ankle injury which kept him out from the season.
By the time he returned after recovering, his command was missing and the throws that he pitched gave way to hits and runs. Thus, he became the scapegoat in most of the defeats that the Mets suffered.
Irrespective of how Santana has performed in the season, Alderson heaps praise on him, stating throwing reasonable number of innings after not spending much time on the mound last year is impressive from his part.
"As good an explanation as any is that this is a substantial number of innings that he pitched over the course of the season following a season of no activity other than rehab," Alderson said. "This may just be a way that his body is telling him that it's
been a long time since the injury, through the rehabilitation and the number of innings he's pitched this year, and the body is starting to complain. But again, I think it would be very hard to trace it back to the no-hitter."
Meanwhile, Santana will be taking a corner now and thinking ways to improve his command and control for the next season.
He will be looking to make up for the poor win-loss record in the season by recording greater number of victories in the upcoming years.
It will be interesting to see as to how he fixes loop-holes in his throws and restores his reputation of being a quality hurler.
