New York Mets’ Jose Reyes on the disabled list with hamstring injury – MLB News
If there was one thing that the New York Mets did not want at this time, it was Jose Reyes’ finding himself in the disabled list. Reyes has been placed on the disabled list after his strained left hamstring did not show any sign of early recovery.
The team was obviously worried by it earlier. "I'm concerned about it, obviously. You sensed it not only in the dug-out, you sensed it in the stands. The air came out of the bubble," Mets manager Terry Collins said.
Reyes probably knew what was coming his way. "Every time I injure my leg, I have to be worried because it's my leg. Legs are a big part of my game," Reyes said. Jose has a long history of leg injuries that he has not been able to overcome.
"It's not too much pain. I feel it a little bit," Reyes said. "I didn't want to blow my hamstring again because I've been through a lot with that." However, the pain proved to be utterly dangerous for him to stay as he will be in the disabled list till July
18, or probably longer than that.
The departure of Reyes at this hour, if nothing else, raises alarm bells. The fact that the team could not sweep the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers has already indicated what it means to play without a player as important as Reyes.
Having had an average of .354 in batting, the 28-year-old occupies second place in the ranking with 30 stolen bases.
Priding himself for being the New York Mets’ all time leader in stolen bases, triples and runs scored, Jose Reyes has led the League in triples initially for two consecutive years in 2005-06 and then in 2008.
Not only that, Reyes holds the record of having led the National League in stolen bases in three consecutive years of 2005, 2006, and 2007 --- distinguishing himself from his contemporaries.
His fitness problem naturally worries the Mets, who despite having got an early 3-0, against the Dodgers in the four-game series, lost the last game by 6-0 to snap the winning streak.
Not only has this fitness problem worried the Dominican baseball player, but has troubled the team as a whole who now wants his quick recovery to avoid further losses in the days to come.
Working to improve their record in the ongoing season, the Mets have 45 wins and 42 losses and certainly their performance will hinge upon how the players perform in the absence of a major player of the team.
