New York Mets’ Jose Reyes return uncertain – MLB News
Jose Reyes’ return seems to be far-fetched, for now. On Sunday, August 14 the team manager expressed his doubt if Jose Reyes would be able to return by August 23 as was previously indicated. While Reyes’ return seems to be uncertain, Ruben Tejada will replace
him at short.
As Tejada is readily available for Reyes replacement, it is known to all and sundry that he could not be an adequate substitute for Reyes who got unfit for the second time this season just when his presence could not be underestimated.
The New York Mets’ team manager Terry Collins made it known that it was not going to be any time soon that Reyes may join the team. “Not to my knowledge, he has not,” Collins said. “I know that when we left, they said for the next three days, he’s going
to rest.”
Only recently had Jose Reyes struck a highly optimistic note that he would be joining the team. Important to mention here was that he had originally been scheduled to return on the 23rd of the month which does not seem possible now.
“Wouldn’t it be better off to have it be one day as opposed to two weeks off?” Collins said before tonight’s game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. “And the answer to that is, ‘Yes, it is going to be better.’”
The star short-stop got in the disabled list for the second time in the season in the first week of July. Like mentioned earlier, on 23rd was his expected return date for which he had already started rehabilitation practice. His strained left
hamstring, however, does not allow him to play for now.
As shocking and undesirable as the news is for the team, Jose Reyes himself is greatly troubled by it. He does not try to conceal his increasing frustration with it. Yet he has all the optimism as well with complete confidence in his ability to return with
more majesty in the future.
That’s the way that I’m going to play, because that’s the way that I’ve been playing all my life,” Reyes said after the injury. “It’s hard for me to slow down, because that’s not going to be me.”
Having played 98 games this season, he has remained 428 at-bats with 80 runs, having hit 144 hits. Importantly, his RBIs stand at 37 while he has an impressive average of .336 with .377 OBP.
A regular contributor to the team’s victory, Jose Reyes – therefore – enjoys a special status in the New York Mets. As the fans and team camp await his early return, Reyes will soon be in action if things go well in the coming weeks.
