New York Mets’ Jose Reyes talks of staying until the season ends – MLB News
Jose Reyes who has been representing the New York Mets since 2003 has triggered enormous speculations and rumours about his stay or departure from the team as he said on Monday, June 20, he would not be seeking an extension.
Having remained at-bat 80 times this month, the short-stop has scored 18 runs with his 27 hits which include three 2-run homers coupled with four 3-run homers, making him one of the finest players starring the team.
Having an average of .338 in June and an a career average of .777, the player wants to focus on the game instead of becoming the part of controversies and rumours surrounding one of the oldest Mets’ star.
"Right now, I don't want any distractions," Reyes said. "I just want to continue to play. We're going to have plenty of time in the offseason to make this happen."
28-year-old Reyes who signed a 23-million-dollar deal with his team in 2006 might also be looking at greater deals considering the fact that Carl Crawford got a 142-million-dollar deal with the Red Sox.
Mets’ General Manager Sandy Alderson expressed his impatience with the suggestions of making a quick decision."If we're in it, it would be hard for me to see us trading Jose Reyes," Alderson said, referring to the playoff race. "If we're out of it? I don't
think being out of it dictates anything."
Reyes who had said he wished to stay with his team in one of the interviews is certainly looking for something greater as he thinks he has a long way to go despite being in his thirties. But what frustrates his bid is something unavoidable.
He has remained vulnerable to injuries despite the level of his talent and the feat he could manifest. However, there remains no doubt that with the amount of talent that he has will be able to attract big bids once an offer is to be set.
"He wants to focus on baseball," Alderson said. "He wants to focus on what's going on on the field. So with that in mind, we will respect his wishes and hopefully pick up negotiations at the end of the season."
While the deal is now facing postponement with all the speculations surrounding it, Reyes undeniably wants to focus on the game in an effort to increase his salary through the free agency’s marketing system.
The Mets which have lost 38 games this season, winning 35 are trailing behind, standing at fourth in the National League East Standings. With all the challenges that the team faces, Reyes stay or departure will certainly have its bearing.
