New York Mets’ R.A. Dickey can invite trade interest from various organisations in offseason-MLB
After leading New York Mets in 2012 regular season as their de facto ace, R.A. Dickey has taken his trade value to a level where the clubs can agree to sacrifice their top prospects in order to acquire him.
This has put the Mets in an ideal situation, handing them a luxury to bring quality players on the roster without making any cash outflow.
For an organisation like the Mets, spending a huge amount of money during the offseason and strengthening the credentials of their side is extremely difficult.
They cannot afford to make long-term commitments with renowned players. In-short, they tend to manage their limited money in a way that they produce maximum results out of it.
As far as the intent of the Mets’ officials is concerned, they have not planned to get rid of Dickey yet. Their General Manager, Sandy Alderson is of the view that regardless of the trade value of Dickey he will go all out to ascertain that the hurler stays
with the club.
Dickey has been the force that brought a respectable number of wins for the team in the season. His role in terms of keeping the side afloat in the face of possible losing streaks has been immensely significant.
He ensured victories for the team when the rest of the members were going through the decline. Against this backdrop, it is understandable that the Mets want to retain him for the upcoming seasons.
Dickey along with the third baseman David Wright is seeking a contract extension from the club. The negotiations to this effect are underway and it is expected that the finalisation of the deal is made soon.
The fact the Mets exercised option on both these players as soon as the decision was to be made shows that they are seriously looking to keep them in the club.
However the financially weak condition of the Mets can become a hurdle as they may be unable to offer the desired amount of money.
In case the Mets fail to clinch a contract renewal with Dickey, the starting pitcher may go on to earn an expensive deal from any of the clubs.
It will be interesting to see as to how the talks progress and reach a conclusion.
