New York Mets’ R.A. Dickey will not be pitching on short rest - MLB Update
The New York Mets’ manager Terry Collins rules out the possibility of increasing burden on the starting pitcher R.A. Dickey unless it is about winning Cy Young Award or the emergence of acute need.
Denying the reports that suggested earlier that Dickey may be used more frequently now, he has asserted that he will throw as per the schedule.
Dickey has enjoyed a tremendous success this year. Unlike all the years that he spent in the Major League before this season, he has been winning matches and throwing complete games on consistent basis.
While the rest of the starters on the Mets’ rotation struggled, he has not stopped throwing quality innings on the mound.
Recently, he helped the Mets earn a much needed victory after they were heading toward a serious slump. Snapping their losing streak, he recorded his 15th win of the season.
Meanwhile, New York’s starters are finding it difficult to block runs and avoid defeats. Along with this, some of their hurlers are injured, which has shortened options for the manager.
In light of this, there was an idea floated earlier that since Dickey is a stand out performer from the rotation, he can be asked to assume greater role and offset the damage in turn.
However, Mets’ manager Collins seems content with not changing the schedule of Dickey. He is more concerned about having Dickey in the next season fit.
Collins likes to see an equally amazing performance from him in the next year. For this, a special care with regard to the use of the starting pitcher is required.
"Running R.A. Dickey out there every fourth day, I’m not sure it’s going to be the healthiest thing under our circumstances," Collins said. "He’s willing to do it. But I’m just not comfortable doing it right now. If we were in the hunt it may be really different.
I think we have to be a little more cautious and make sure he’s ready for next year."
In the meantime, the Mets will be looking to improve their winning percentage in the upcoming games.
As they have been poor in the last few weeks, they will require long winning streaks for this.
