New York Mets’ Sandy Alderson hints trading R.A. Dickey - MLB Update
New York Mets’ General Manager Sandy Alderson has not ruled out the possibility that R.A. Dickey might be traded. Although he hopes to see him in the team for the upcoming seasons, he has maintained that a trade is one of the options.
Dickey is a strong contender for the Cy Young Award this year. In case he is not offered contract extension even after his extraordinary performance during 2012 regular season, it will be an exceptional scenario.
Normally the pitcher that has won so many matches for the team can be certain that he will be granted renewal of his existing agreement.
Actually the Mets lack enough resources to clinch the kind of deals that players like Dickey want. They cannot commit a huge amount of money for a number of years on just one player, because they confront the need to address other areas on their roster.
Earlier reports stated that New York is extremely interested to retain Dickey. There was an impression that the declaration about the new contract will be made by them soon.
As the days progressed, the likelihood that the on-going negotiations will produce something positive reduced sharply.
In his statement, Alderson has tried to restrict speculations but at the same time he has mentioned his limitations with regard to granting contract extension.
He has unambiguously unveiled that acquiring a quality outfielder during the offseason is as important for him as anything else.
"I would hate to give up, for different reasons, an R.A. Dickey or a Jonathon Niese or a Dillon Gee, but it is our strength and it's something we would have to entertain," he said. "I don't want you to leave here thinking we're going to trade a starting
pitcher and that's an absolute. But it's logical for us to consider that."
As far as the current situation is concerned, it will not be taken as a surprise if the Mets visit free agent market and ignore the pending contract extension of Dickey. This is very much clear from the words of the GM.
Dickey will be hoping that the Mets somehow work out a deal for him. It will be interesting to see how the Mets make a decision about him in the off-season.
