New York Mets’ Terry Collins shows interest in retaining Kelly Shoppach next year - MLB Update
As the season heads toward its completion, the New York Mets will be looking at how they can learn lessons from it and use them to put up a better performance next year.
In this regard, their catcher Kelly Shoppach will be one of the considerations of the management as far as the contract extensions to players is concerned. Shoppach was acquired by the Mets from the Boston Red Sox through the trade but his contract will
come to an end at the conclusion of the current season.
This calls for the deliberations from the team officials and discussing whether he is worthwhile for the club to be offered a contract or not.
Shoppach will currently be happy as Mets’ manager Terry Collins has shown interest in him. Collins believes the way he catches the pitches is incredible. Other than his defence, Collins is equally impressed by his offensive prowess.
"We all know he's got power," manager Terry Collins said. "But I really like where he sits behind the hitter – gets right underneath the hitter. Does a very good job of keeping the ball in front of him. His hands are soft. Whoever's worked with him defensively,
I really like the way he handles the glove."
Shoppach has performed extremely well in particular with regard to the offence since joining the Mets. In light of the fact that Josh Thole, another catcher for Mets, was struggling to show power at the plate earlier, his addition in the line-up has turned
out to be a healthier one.
Based on his current performance, it can be believed that the Mets will grant him the contract extension when the next season starts he will be on their roster.
Although he has yet to master the art of gloving knucklers thrown by R.A. Dickey, one of Mets’ starters, he is capable of making adjustments to them with time.
Shoppach currently is relishing his time with the Mets. Despite the fact that the team as a whole is struggling, the players’ attitude is positive.
“They're friends, so that benefits on and off the field, which makes it a nice environment to come into, even though we haven't been playing well,” Shoppach said.
It will be interesting to see whether Shoppach can be successful in earning a contract extension from the Mets at the end of the season.
