New York Mets’ Terry Collins will remain until 2013, claims a team source - MLB News
In light of the fact the New York Mets have failed miserably in the second half of the season, it is not surprising to begin believing reports that manager Terry Collins’ job might be in jeopardy.
However, just to keep unnecessary speculations from emerging, a team source has clarified that Collins will stay in the club for the current season as well as for the next year. After 2013, the General Manager Sandy Alderson will decide on the contract extension.
Collins has played an important role in the first half success of the team. Given the fact that the Mets entered the season with a range of issues confronting to the team from the financial problems to the dearth of quality pitchers on rotation Collins’
role has been terrific in utilising the minimum resources effectively.
Throughout the first half of the season, the fundamental loop-holes that exist in the Mets were not visible. Instead the team was heading to become one of the most successful clubs in the National League East Division.
However, in stark contrast to what happened in the first half, the second half has turned out to be a nightmare for the organisation. They have struggled in every department of play.
Their offence which was earlier lifted by the likes of David Wright and Kirk Nieuwenhuis is struggling immensely, with most of the batters missing at-bats. Even more troubling fact is the way the hitters succumb to pressure and do not connect hits while
the base-runners are sitting on scoring positions.
Keeping in view the poor performance in the second half, there is a danger about the possible sacking of Collins after this season. However a team source has made it clear now that he is going to complete his contractual terms with the club.
Far from thinking about the changes in the staff, the management is more concerned about taking the team to third position on table, which appears to be a difficult objective in light of the fact that the Mets are currently the lowest ranking team.
"It doesn't seem like a big thing, but there should be some pride there," the source stated.
As the season progresses, it will be fascinating to see as to what extent the objectives of the club are achieved.
