New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies may look for Melky Cabrera in free agency-MLB Update
After testing positive for performance enhancing drugs (PED), Melky Cabrera’s chances to earn a blockbuster offering in the offseason has reduced dramatically.
As the season progressed, he was heading to clinch an expensive contract in the free agency at the conclusion of it. As soon as he was found guilty in using PED, all the hype related to his free agency disappeared.
Yet Cabrera is in a position to invite interests from the likes of New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies in the offseason. The fact both of these clubs require a quality outfielder, Cabrera may become an ideal option to pursue for them.
As far as the Mets are concerned, their financial limitations may make the possible deal highly improbable. On the other hand, the Phillies that boast a healthy financial condition can make the kind of offer to Cabrera that is in accord with his expectations.
Cabrera does not seek any introduction when it comes to his offensive capabilities. He is renowned for his power hitting prowess.
Before his expedition was put to halt by the drugs related fiasco, he was hitting fluently for the San Francisco Giants. In almost every match, he was striking massive hits and lifting the offence of his team.
In light of this, if the Phillies acquire Cabrera, he will be a massive addition in their offence. Apart from removing their concerns with regard to the outfield, he can make their line-up a force to reckon with.
Commenting on the possibility of getting an extravagant contract by Cabrera in the offseason, one of the National League executives claimed that he will have to prove his credentials again.
“He was a pretty good player with the Yankees, fat and terrible for Atlanta, very good last year (for the Kansas City Royals) and unbelievable this year," an executive stated. "Who is the real guy? I saw him in the minors and I thought he was an extra outfielder.
I have hard time going out of my way to reward a guy trying to break the system as badly as this guy did.”
After completing the duration of his suspension from Major League Baseball, he will be starting from the scratch. To reach the level where he can bag the desired deal from any of the clubs, he will be looking to put in a lot of work.
It is likely that Cabrera signs a relatively inexpensive agreement with the Mets for one year. After convincing the rest of the teams by playing at his best there, he may look to invoke free agency with the same amount of hype that he generated before his
suspension due to the drug-usage.
It will be interesting to see which club he plays for in the next season.
