New York Mets are humiliated 1-9 by New York Yankees as Johan Santana fails - MLB Update
Starter Johan Santana crumbles on the mound as the New York Mets are humiliated by the New York Yankees 1-9 in the first game of the three match series on June 8, 2012 at Yankee Stadium, New York, NY.
Coming after a rest of two extra days, a tremendous amount of hope was being pinned on Santana by Mets’ manager Terry Collins.
Against formidable side like the Yankees, the Mets put their best face front. Looking to go one up in the series and put the Yankees under pressure, they met a haunting failure instead. As a result, their confidence was dented.
Santana was scratched after five innings. Six runs he leaked included four home-runs.
''A couple of extra days and I felt fine,'' Santana said. ''I just didn't have my feeling for a couple of my pitches. There were times when they stayed up and when you leave pitches up, you know, they're a pretty good team and in this ballpark, you keep
pitches up, they end up out of the park, and that's what happened.''
Following Santana, Elvin Ramirez stepped on the mound, but flow of runs did not stop and the Yankees reached unassailability.
Only two hits came off from the Mets, which is embarrassing for the manager.
Left fielder Jason Bay, who pulled out of last game due to stomach problem, came across three at-bats. He was hitless on return from long injury.
Mets’ third baseman David Wright had no answer for his hitless outing on plate. His batting average comes down to .357, after crossing .400 earlier in the season.
Perfect seven innings Hiroki Kuroda, the Yankees’ starter, threw left the Mets looking for face-saving, let alone making come back into the game.
Mets’ offence is not as mediocre as it was made to look on Friday, by Kuroda.
Missing a chance to win first game of the series has toughened the task for the Mets for next two games. With confidence down, they will need something spectacular to happen now.
Getting proper run-support from offence and reasonable number of scoreless innings from their starter will be crucial for their success in the remaining games of the series.
