New York Mets assign Lucas Duda to Triple-A Buffalo after poor performance in the season - MLB
The right fielder Lucas Duda has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo after the New York Mets are unable to witness consistent performances from him in the season.
Not only has his production as a hitter gone down, Duda has been prone to making fumbles defensively. In some occasions, he has failed to make plays in the situations where one generally expects that a fielder will glove the ball easily.
The 26-year-old right fielder is hitting just .241 in the season so far. With 12 home-runs and 44 RBIs, he has posted a .335 on-base-percentage. Therefore, it can be realised as to why the Mets have taken this decision.
The fact New York is in the hunt for long winning streaks at this moment can explain the drastic measures the team has resorted to now. The Mets are standing at a critical juncture of the season. Therefore, anything less than average performance from a hitter
will not help their cause for winning a play-off spot.
Along with the demotion of Duda, the Mets have called up their top pitching prospect Matt Harvey from the Minor Leagues to the Majors, which is another indication of their hunger for winning more matches at this stage of the season.
Meanwhile, Mets’ manager Terry Collins speaks on the issue of Ike Davis and how he was not sent to the Minors despite the fact that his production was declining at the start of the season. Collins believes that back then their overall performance was commendable,
which had given them a leeway for providing Davis more chances.
"No. 1, we were playing good with Ike Davis. He was not hurting us, from our performance as a team,'' Collins said. "Lucas Duda's going to be a good player here. He gets down on himself pretty heavy and we always try to get him out of it. I don't know if
it affects his play, but you certainly see it during the tough times. And one thing at this level, if you know you're beat and the other team knows you're beat, you're in trouble.''
Duda will be going down to the Minors now. He will be trying to fix issues with regards to his defence and ensures that he improves as soon as possible.
