New York Mets avoid sweep as they defeat San Francisco Giants 5-2 - Part 1
New York Mets put in a good performance as they defeat San Francisco Giants 5-2 to avoid the series sweep at Citi Field, New York on Thursday, May 5.
After going through their fair share of defeats, the San Francisco Giants finally picked themselves up and were victorious in their first two games against the New York Mets. However in the third and final game, the Mets won and barely avoided the three
game sweep at the hands of the reigning World Series Champions.
In the first two games of the series the Giants were the winners with seven runs in the first match and two runs in the second one. The Mets gave close competition to the Giants on Monday as they trailed their seven runs closely with six runs of their own,
but they couldn’t manage a single run in the second game.
High expectations have been placed on Mike Pelfrey and to the Mets’ relief he met those expectations and more. He pitched like the ace that he is throughout the game. He pitched seven and two third innings and that along with Carlos Beltran’s two run homer
helped the Mets prevent their three game sweep.
Just a day before the Mets had been shut-out by the Giants pitcher par excellence, Tim Lincecum. Even against him the Mets managed to get five hits, which is saying something because once Lincecum is on fire, he doesn’t let any hits pass him by.
Pat Burell and Buster Posey did not start for the Giants and Freddy Sanchez couldn’t due to his sore right thumb. Even though these three players along with other injured players were not on the field, the Giants still somehow managed to slip under the .500
at 15-16. Till now, they have played in 22 road games.
Pelfray is originally anchoring the Mets’ rotation because of Johan Santana being injured. He started of the game with a 7.29 ERA. Regarding his performance in the game, he said, "I was overthrowing it, trying to do too much, trying to make things happen."
In the duration of seven and two third innings he sacrificed only one earned run and a mere four hits. He told Dan Warthen, his pitching coach, "It felt like it clicked again. Almost effortless."
The Mets managed to avoid the series sweep against the mighty Giants with a superb win. New York put in a good team effort to take the victory. Pelfrey pitched with brilliance, as he contained the Giants’ hitters throughout the game. The Giants again showed
their unpredictable nature, as they win and lose without any great consistency.
