New York Mets avoid sweep as they defeat San Francisco Giants 5-2 - Part 2
In the last match of the series, the New York Mets managed to save themselves from being swept by the San Francisco Giants.
In the ninth inning, San Francisco loaded the bases with one out against Francisco Rodriguez but Miguel Tejada still struck-out. After this, Buster Posey grounded out. For Rodriguez, these were his fourth out and seventh save of the season.
"I've seen it before, this guy needs some tension, he needs to be on the edge," Mets’ manager Terry Collins said. "I wish he wouldn't do that. I'm too old to watch this stuff."
This match was of particular importance to the Giants. They have not managed to sweep the Mets since 2002 and that is what they intended to this time as well. They were also trying to finish a stretch where they played 16 out of 19 games away from home.
"It's good to be heading home," Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy said.
Very well known for the shaky control that Sanchez possesses, it wasn’t surprising that he gave up five runs along with five hits in the duration of five innings. He also allowed six walks.
The first hit of the game was from the Mets side in the second inning, as Ronny Paulino grounded into a double play. Bay later scored and Ian Davis got out at the second base. Again in the second inning, Jose Reyes tripled towards centre-field as Hairston
and Pelfrey scored.
For the Giants, their first run came in the fourth inning. Mike Fontenot belted out a home-run with two outs that covered a good 382 feet. The next two runs came in the fifth innings as Sanchez singled towards centre of the field. Schierholtz scored off
it and Whiteside swiftly moved towards second base.
The Mets got another chance to score in the fifth inning, as Beltran hit a home-run towards the left side of the field which flew 375 feet. Wright managed to score as well.
Just a day after the trade rumours of Reyes going from the Mets to the Giants surfaced, the All Star streaked around the bases on his triple. He was seen to be arguing when he was called out on the strikes at the end of the fourth inning and then committed
a throwing error in the fifth inning.
"Maybe I was a little bit angry," Reyes said.
All the home-runs that Beltran has belted out this season have been at Citi Field stadium. It will be interesting to see how long the Mets can carry this momentum into their next series. The Giants fought hard, but it was not enough to sweep the Mets.
