New York Mets await response from David Wright to their contract offer - MLB Update
As per the sources close to the matter, New York Mets have offered David Wright the maximum that they could. They are waiting for the response from his part now.
By and large, experts believe that the deal will be agreed by both the parties without further delay.
According to the reports, the total worth of the contract is almost $140 million.
Apparently, the reason why Wright has not accepted the offer right away is because of the structure of the deal. The element of deferred payments of some of the amount must be discouraging for Wright.
Actually, the deal is spread over a number of years in such a way that per year salary in the first few seasons from the date of effectiveness of the agreement will be smaller. As the years go by, the amount will increase and in a similar pattern it will
continue growing until total sum of the deal is recovered by Wright.
Wright is concerned with finding the value of his contract reduce with the passage of time. The salary that he earns in the first year of his contract can be worth more than the higher amounts he gets in the last few seasons before the expiry of his agreement.
When it was asked from experts, they stated that more often than not the Mets structure their long-term agreements in such a manner. Being a financially weaker organisation, they have their limitations and thus going about ways cautiously is sometimes indispensable
for them.
The agreement that they signed with Johan Santana was similarly modelled. As Santana had agreed to it, it can be expected that Wright will also do the same.
If the agreement is confirmed, it will arguably be the most interesting story of this offseason.
Firstly, it is due to the very contributions that Wright made for the organisation for the last many seasons. Secondly, it is because of the desire of Wright to stay with the Mets throughout his career.
Wright was a standout performer for New York during the 2012 season. Offensively, he was undisputedly the most successful batter in the team.
At one stage, his batting average surpassed .400 before it reversed and ended up standing at .306 at the conclusion of the season.
One of the executives has commented that the agreement will be finalised soon, because New York and Wright are equally interested in giving it a final touch.
“I think both parties want this to work,” said an executive. “They’re not going to let this break down over details.”
The next few days can see the formal declaration made by both the parties.
It will be fascinating to note the enthusiasm of Wright after gaining the certificate that he will complete his career with the Mets.
