New York Mets beat Colorado Rockies 7-5 at Coors Field - MLB Update
Starter Dillon Gee strikes-out seven to lead the New York Mets in a 7-5 win over Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado on April 28, 2012.
The Mets immediately replied after slumping 9-18 against the same opposition in their last game. In particular, their pitchers performed in a stark contrast to their last poor outing.
Gee gave two walks, the only ones that the Mets allowed in the whole game. In a lengthy seven innings, few slight rough-ups apart, he was not far from his best.
Another positive happening for the Mets in the game was an improved show by relief pitcher, Frank Francisco. He took the swipe from almost everywhere when he did a poor job late in the innings earlier in the season.
After two games, one in which he brought the Mets to a brink of defeat and second when he actually cost them the loss, it was difficult decision for the manager Terry Collins to give him more chances.
He was successful in keeping the Rockies at bay, not allowing them go past three runs lead the Mets had in the bottom of the ninth.
David Wright continued his great performance in the season after becoming RBIs leader for the Mets the other day. He went 3-for-4, adding two RBIs and completing two runs. With this, he takes his slugging percentage to .569, highest in the line-up.
Right-fielder Lucas Duda whacked a homer in second to give the Mets one run lead, which was later chased down by the Rockies in third before the Mets bounced back in the fifth.
Mets’ ability to turn things around un-expectedly has been notable in the season. Most of the games they have won resulted during such situations when one will simply write them off for the win.
With the victory, the Mets have come closer to the Atlanta Braves, a side currently second on the table. Couple of more wins can very well land them on first position in the table.
As regard to offence, the Mets apparently do not have much of the problem. It is their shaky pitching department which can let them down anytime in the season.
This issue is more pressing in light of an injury their starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey has struck on the shoulder.
The manager Terry Collins will attempt to work out potential frailties the club can have in this area.
