New York Mets beat Miami Marlins 3-0 as Ike Davis and R.A. Dickey shine - MLB Update
First baseman Ike Davis and starter R.A. Dickey lead the New York Mets to a 3-0 win against the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park, Miami on August 31, 2012 in the first game of the three match series.
Davis single-handedly pushed the Mets into the lead which proved sufficient as the Marlins lacked the power against Dickey to come close.
While in the beginning of the season Davis was struggling and was almost failing in every game, it seems he has reached a different level now for which he was allowed so many opportunities earlier.
The team officials knew the fact that once Davis gets going he can win matches on his own for the team. Therefore they did not demoralise the first baseman by sending him down to the Minor League.
Right now he is rewarding the confidence of the management and is becoming a saviour for the club at a time when most of the batters have surrendered.
Dickey was equally impressive in the match. The complete game he threw tells how effective he was on the mound. Although New York maintained lead in the match, it was not beyond the reach of the Marlins and therefore was always vulnerable.
In light of this, the role Dickey played in restricting batters is worth mentioning. While he struck-out seven, he did not leak even a single run in nine innings.
Meanwhile, Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen accredits Dickey’s credentials for potentially winning the Cy Young Award. Considering the fact Dickey holds a tremendous record against Miami, Guillen commented that if Dickey does win the Cy Young Award, it would
be nice if he speaks about the Marlins.
"Dickey was outstanding," Guillen said. "Make sure when he's got the speech for the Cy Young that he mentions the Marlins. We would appreciate that."
As far as the home-run that Davis struck in the game is concerned, he is of the view that the hit was uncharacteristic of him as he normally struggles against those kinds of pitches.
"The home run was just a curveball I saw pretty well. I usually don't hit those very well, so I was a kind of surprised I hit it," Davis said.
Mets will be looking to keep the momentum afloat and build up a long winning streak from now onward.
