New York Mets beat Miami Marlins 5-1 as they register tenth victory - MLB Update
Starter R.A. Dickey and third baseman David Wright lead the New York Mets to 5-1 win against Miami Marlins at Citi Field in New York, NY on April 25, 2012.
For first five innings, the Mets were scoreless. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wright hit a homer and triggered Daniel Murphy to complete the second run.
Centre-fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis remained hitless for the Mets and saw his batting average fall to .309.
Marlins’ slump continues as their offence betrays them again. Jose Reyes, their star shortstop, is no way near to what he is capable of. His poor performance has even initiated debate over his likely shuffle in the line-up.
Reyes is hitting .217 as he went 1-for-4 in the game. His current performance in the season as many believe goes to vindicate the Mets’ decision of not retaining him during the off-season.
Starter Dickey recovered immediately from a poor outing in last game. While throwing seven innings for the Mets, he struck-out seven and gave up one run.
One of the differences between top teams of the season and the Mets has been paucity of sluggers. None of the Mets’ currently holds a slugging percentage of .6, something that will matter immensely as the season progresses.
The fact Wright transpired for the Mets in the game with a homer and a jump of slugging percentage to .545 as a result is a healthy sign for the team. Wright now leads the line-up in this respect.
He connected one hit in three at-bats and added two runs. He also contributed two RBIs.
With this, Wright can feel better of his chances in fetching a contract extension from the Mets at the end of his previous agreement.
As far as the Marlins are concerned, starter Mark Buehrle was relatively better with two runs in seven innings, it was an entry of Mike Dunn on the mound that allowed the Mets to enjoy a run-spree. Dunn gave up three runs in less than one inning.
It was another forgettable day for the Marlins. The club confronts an onslaught from critics on their slump who now questions an extravaganza they resorted to during off-season purchases to avoid this.
The Mets will be happy to see their pitchers and hitters keep showing up the way they did in the game.
