New York Mets beaten by Cincinnati Reds 0-3 as Manny Acosta costs two runs - MLB Update
The relief pitcher Manny Acosta betrays the New York Mets in the last inning as the club lose to the Cincinnati Reds 0-3 at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio on August 14, 2012 in the first game of the three match series.
All through the game both the teams were scoreless, except in the last inning. New York’s offence remained quiet throughout the match. However, their pitchers kept them in contention by throwing scoreless innings and thus making it difficult for Reds to
enjoy an easy victory.
Until the end of the eighth, the Mets were equally poised for winning the game. A couple of runs from the batters will have ensured their triumph.
However, as the match headed toward a tie and the additional innings were about to be played the Mets relief pitcher Manny Acosta came and spoiled their chances by surrendering a home-run in the ninth.
Meanwhile, the Mets will be pleased with an impressive performance by their starter Chris Young. While Young allowed runs which resulted into the defeats of the team earlier, he did not leak any run on Tuesday. He pitched little more than five innings while
yielding eight hits.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins believes Young did the great job. Only if there was better run support from the offence, he will have made the most of his outing on the mound. At the same time, Collins emphasises the importance of timely hits from the part of
the batters if bases-loaded scenarios are to be converted into runs.
"He executed the game plan to perfection with guys on base," Collins said. "We had opportunities. We have to find a way to score with runners on base and less than two outs."
The Mets connected six hits on Tuesday. Their third baseman David Wright who is generally the most prolific in the line-up was hitless in three at-bats. Similarly, their first baseman Ike Davis failed to strike even a single hit in three at-bats.
As it was the first game of the series, the Mets have a chance to fight back and possibly win it. They will be hoping to see their offence getting a greater number of hits in the next two matches.
