New York Mets blanked 0-1 by Colorado Rockies as Bobby Parnell gives up one run - MLB Update
Relief pitcher Bobby Parnell gives up one run in the eighth as the New York Mets lose to the Colorado Rockies 0-1 at Citi Field, New York in the last match of the four game series on August 23, 2012.
In a low scoring game, New York failed to capitalise on the opportunity to add a few runs on the scoreboard and win the match. The fact that the first run in the match came in the eighth, signals that the game was open for most part of the innings and either
side could win it at any time.
Unfortunately New York’s offence was mediocre all through the game as it did not score even a single run. The slump that it is experiencing at the moment appears to be permanent as in the last many weeks most of the games played by the Mets have been lost
by them due to poor performance by the hitters.
On Thursday despite the fact New York struck seven hits, they struggled to convert them into runs. The base-runners who were in a position to reach home plate were unable to witness productive hits from the batters at a time when they were needed the most.
While earlier the hitters like their third baseman David Wright and the first baseman Ike Davis were slamming useful hits, currently the whole of the line-up is silent against the pitchers and is not stepping up.
Wright connected one hit in four at-bats in the game.
Furthermore, Davis was hitless on Thursday. Similarly the catcher Josh Thole was 0-for-3.
Meanwhile Thole realises that the team is passing through a lean period and that the offence cannot afford to perform poor for such a long time period.
''It's a nightmare for everybody in this clubhouse,'' Thole said. ''When it happens once, OK. When it happens again, all right guys, you've got to move on. But three nights in a row. And then four. And then it keeps mounting up. You can only say we've got
to put this behind us so many times.''
The series has come to an end now and the Mets will be heading for the upcoming games with the bitter memories. It will be interesting to see how they improve their performance and focus on playing.
