New York Mets can become contender in a foreseeable future, believes David Wright-MLB Update
The New York Mets are gradually strengthening their foundations, as per the evaluation of David Wright of the team.
The addition of quality prospects in the farm system can render the club in such a position after some years from today that they will be among the top contenders for the playoffs in their division.
Wright acknowledges that the small payroll of the Mets is the reason why they are weak in most departments of the game.
Compared to the rest of the teams, they have low budget. Thus, their ability to acquire quality players is limited.
Unless the Mets see capital investment made in their organisation within a next couple of years, they will continue playing seasons with mediocre players on their roster.
In such a scenario, according to Wright, the best way for the Mets is strengthening the basis first.
Once the Minor League has been made competitive, star players will emerge automatically from there.
In short, the bulk of the task by the Mets will be accomplished then.
By streamlining issues with the farm system, they can manage to have best talent of the game available for them, at the least financial cost.
Wright believes the recent trade by the Mets of R.A Dickey and the resultant entry of top prospects in the team can go a long way in ensuring long term sustainability of the Mets.
For example, the individuals that are immensely talented right now will become a source of pride for the franchise one day.
While Wright admits the cost to the team after the trade of Dickey, he does not feel that the Mets have not achieved anything from this deal.
"I'm not sure what kind of situation at this second we're in just with what payroll is or anything," Wright said. "You look, and just because you spend that type of money doesn't guarantee anything. I think what Sandy has done is obviously one of the first
steps in solidifying -- and we're not talking many years down the road, we're talking about in the near future -- the young talent this organization is going to have.”
Wright is hopeful that down the road if the Mets require some free agents, they will have the financial capacity to approach them.
Only the time will tell as to what extent Wright is correct with regard to his assumptions about the New York.
