New York Mets come from behind to defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 – MLB Update
The New York Mets made a late exhibition to overpower the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 in the first game of the three-game series at Dodger Stadium in California on Monday, July 5.
The Dodgers took the game into their hand achieving 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning and their starter provided strong back up with his fast sinkers and swinging balls. However, in the top of the sixth inning, the Mets not only opened their
account but also pulled the game to their side 3-2.
Angel Pagan drove in an RBI single off the Dodgers’ starter Rubby De La Rosa to set the three-run sixth inning. Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy followed Pagan in hitting and each made an RBI single to take their team from 2-1 behind to put it to a 3-2 lead.
Then in the eighth inning, Jason Bay and Lucas Duda each made an RBI single to cement the lead to a 5-2 indisputable position.
On the other hand, the Mets’ starter Chris Capuano made a come-back and struck-out five batters over his six innings to grab his eighth win of the season. Bobby Parnell threw two no-hitter innings and Francisco Rodriguez allowed just a single hit in the
ninth inning to get his 21st save in 40 games in this season.
La Rosa, who has not given even a single run in his first five innings, got a little loose in the sixth and allowed three runs on five hits. Despite these runs, he allowed one walk and made just five strike-outs over seven innings. However, he did not receive
a back up from the batters and pitchers.
"It's frustrating from the standpoint that Rubby was pitching good," Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly said, "and we got a lead early and had a chance there to add on and we weren't able to do it."
Scott Elbert gave away two runs on one hit on just nine pitches. Closer Matt Guerrier however did not yield any run in just over one inning.
"That's the only way we've played," manager Terry Collins said. "Guys have just stepped up. I'm not saying they've got to play better than they always have, but they just know they've got to concentrate and play the game right."
It was the Dodgers third-straight loss since July 1 when they shut-out Los Angeles Angels 5-0 in the series opener, that they lost 2-1. The Dodgers may have to face their fourth loss on July 5 as Ted Lilly, who is struggling in this season has been scheduled
by Mattingly.
