New York Mets crush Houston Astros 9-1 – MLB Spring Training
New York Mets crushed Houston Astros 9-1 at the Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida on Thursday, March 29 in their Grapefruit League clash of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
Mets’ third baseman David Wright looked in outstanding form as he hit a grand slam to play a key role in Mets’ 9-1 win over Houston Astros. Striking the ball cleanly, it seems Wright is ready for the upcoming regular season. Mike Pelfrey also made a useful contribution, having his longest spring outing to impress the skipper.
Wright missed plenty of spring games in order to recover from a torn rib cage. He will be hoping to stay healthy for the entire regular season to make a name for himself. The striker will make his next spring appearance on Friday in a game against St. Louis Cardinals.
"Livan, he can be a nightmare," Wright said. "We saw that first-hand when he was with us (in 2009). He just goes and he exploits your weaknesses. I kind of got lucky, I ran into one."
Pelfrey, who struggled with a forgettable 11.49 ERA in his previous four spring starts, will be delighted to give up just one run on three hits in just over six innings. He will be looking to get over his poor spring results before the Opening Day.
"I look at a couple things like the ball coming good again," Pelfrey said. "Command was by far the best it's been all spring training. I thought I did a good job of keeping the ball down. Obviously, (there were) a lot of groundballs from that.
"But it is spring training. At the end of the day, I felt good, I felt strong and I thought it was pretty good."
With just six wins and 16 defeats, the Mets were certainly feeling the heat prior to their game on Thursday. However, the way they floored the Astros will give them a great amount of confidence ahead of the regular season.
While the Mets may not be able to win the World Series title this season, they can certainly make themselves proud by reaching the post season. It will be interesting to see if the Mets can manufacture similar pieces in their upcoming games to cheer up their fans.
