New York Mets crush St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 – MLB Recap
New York Mets crushed St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 in the fourth and final game of their four-match regular series encounter on Thursday, May 16 at Busch Stadium in Missouri.
Although this game was won by the Mets, yet the series had already been won by the Cardinals 3-0 even before the start of Thursday’s game.
Mets’ upfront pitchers and hitters outclassed the Cardinals in every department of the game and won in style. Jonathon Niese started the game for the Mets and tossed 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on six hits.
Allowing two earned runs on 5.40 ERA, Niese remained calm on the mound during his entire spell. He struck out three Cardinals top hitters and proved one of the winning factors for the Mets.
“I knew he was going to get it going, As the weather starts to get warm, you're going to see the Jon Niese we're all accustomed to seeing,” Mets manager Terry Collins said for Niese’ brilliant spell.
Later Niese said, “Every pitch felt good, Obviously, our game plan was just to keep attacking the hitters. Yeah, it felt good.”
Along with starter Niese and other relief pitchers Brandon Lyon and Bobby Parnell, the Mets hitters also played well and showed their true offensive game.
New York Mets left fielder Lucas Duda was also exceptional on the plate on his two at bats as he scored one run on one hit. He also ran for an RBI and maintained his slugging percentage of .474.
Second baseman Daniel Murphy and third baseman David Wright together ran for five hits and three RBIs. Both played brilliantly and hit freely in all parts of the field.
“I think we were just able to string together a lot of quality at-bats, There were a lot of good at-bats other than mine. It was nice to be able to feel you contribute,” Murphy said.
Murphy and Wright never allowed the Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright to dominate during the entire game. They hammered him with huge hits as he finished his spell receiving six hits, four runs and three earned runs on 2.51.
Later relief pitcher Fernando Salas came to pitch for the Cardinals but he too was hammered with heavy hitting. He allowed one run on two hits on his 1.1 innings in which his ERA rose to 4.20.
