New York Mets defeat Atlanta Braves 6-4 – MLB Update
The New York Mets put in a good performance to defeat Atlanta Braves 6-4 at Citi Field, New York on Sunday, June 5.
Carlos Beltran commenced the game with a single to deep right-centre giving an early lead to the team. Angel Pagan doubled it in the same inning as Tim Hudson gave up three hits. After the first scoreless inning of Atlanta, the Mets had a 2-0 lead.
The Mets hardly seemed in any mood to spare Hudson as Justin Turner piled up the lead to 3-0 in the second inning, as Beltran scored the fourth run for the Mets, while Dickey was unleashing his unplayable fastballs against the Braves’ offence.
Carlos Beltran got a bruise on his lower leg, triggering speculations whether he will be available for the Milwaukee trip. "Anytime you get hit in the muscle it's going to be sore. It's going to be bruised, it's going to swell a little bit, but discomfort,
we know it's going to dissipate in a few days," Terry Collins said. "Whether it's two or three, I don't know."
The Mets had fairly unpleasant days lately largely because they were unable to win. However, Sunday’s victory adds to the team’s confidence. "We had some tough times," Collins said, "but to come in here and beat the Braves two out of three, leave here on
a positive note, win the series, you've got to look at it positively."
Jose Reyes proved instrumental for the Mets with his single in the fourth inning, making things increasingly difficult for the Braves’ Hudson, who was apparently struggling hard.
Even when Hudson was relieved and Christian Martinez was brought in, the Mets were unstoppable. Ruben Tejada scored the sixth run for the Mets in the sixth inning. Brian McCann was finally able to break the run drought for Braves in the seventh inning.
R.A. Dickey pitched into the eighth inning, allowing only one run during the marathon spell. Atlanta could hope to capitalise upon Manny Acosta who replaced Dickey in the ninth inning.
Diory Hernandez was able to execute a three-run homer in the ninth inning that took the Braves to 6-4. However, Acosta rendered the other hitters literally unable to play him and limited them to the same score, paving the 6-4 victory for the Mets.
It will be interesting to see how the Mets carry their winning momentum into the next game. The Braves put in a decent performance but unfortunately it was not enough to restrict the Mets’ offence.
