New York Mets defeat Baltimore Orioles 4-3 as Dillon Gee shows control on the mound - MLB Update
Starter Dillon Gee puts the last nail in Baltimore Orioles’ coffin by helping the New York Mets complete three-game sweep and winning 4-3 on June 20, 2012 at Citi Field, New York, NY.
Gee almost followed in the footsteps of R.A Dickey and Johan Santana, two starters who kept Orioles scoreless in first two games.
Giving an impression that the Mets have suddenly attained impregnable arms, Gee threw seven scoreless innings. He struck-out nine and gave up two runs.
Game started off with a flurry of scoreless innings from both sides. First score of the game came in the bottom of the fourth. While Mets surged to a dominating lead afterwards, Orioles replied back late in the innings.
Before start of the eighth, New York had a four run lead. They were heading to victory straight away from there on.
Orioles thwarted prospects during penultimate moments and posted two runs in the eighth.
As soon as they followed with another run in the next inning, deciding moment reached and the Orioles came closest to tying the score.
However, unable to keep the momentum going, Orioles failed to tie, letting the Mets finish victorious.
Frank Francisco held his nerves in the ninth and successfully restricted Orioles from stealing a last-inning victory. Despite giving up one run, he was able to eschew being roughed up heavily. He recorded his 17th save on Wednesday.
Following sub-par performances on the plate, third-baseman David Wright fared a splendid show on Wednesday. Striking three hits in four at-bats, he led the Mets' offence from front.
Gee was the star performer for Mets.
When he was compared to Dickey and Santana, he was humble enough to acknowledge that he cannot reach their level easily. He expressed his surprise over the way they have fared on the mound in last couple of games.
''It's tough to follow those guys,'' Gee said. ''It's unbelievable what they've been doing.''
With confidence high, the Mets will be giving tough time to opponents, now.
Finishing the series with such an overwhelming dominance provides a good time for a team to initiate a new beginning. New York manager Terry Collins will make sure momentum does not fall off and the team builds a long winning streak from now onward.
