New York Mets defeat Cincinnati Reds 10-9 to sweep series – MLB Update
New York Mets on Thursday, July 28 completed their four-game sweep against the Cincinnati Reds, winning the toughly fought game 10-9 at the Great American Ball Park.
"The last two games speaks volumes about these guys," said manager Collins, "I can't say enough about the job they've done. ... They were drained. They were wiped out physically. They were wiped out mentally. They were playing strictly on nothing but game
adrenaline."
The loss was hugely disappointing for the Reds who were probably not anticipating such an outcome. The Mets won the first game by 4-2, 6-2 the second, went for 8-2 in the third and here outrivaled the Reds by 10-9.
"We stink right now," the Reds’ Cairo said. "We have to start playing like we know how and we're not doing that right now. We're not doing the little things. Everyone on this team has to do better than we are right now."
The high scoring game began with the Mets’ David Wright scoring the first run in the first inning against Homer Bailey which was quickly reversed by Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips of the Reds, scoring a single each against Chris Capuano of the Mets – ending
the first inning with 2-1.
Both starters then held some sway on the offence but the fourth inning produced a different scenario. Lucas Duda hit a magnificent three-run homer followed by that of Josh Thole’s two-run homer that gave the Mets a 5-2 lead by the end of fourth inning.
Homer Bailey compensated for the runs he generously gave in the fourth inning with a single against Capuano, bringing the Mets’ lead down to 5-3 only to see Angel Pagan scoring a single in the fifth inning to take the lead to 6-3 for the Mets.
Jason Bay then hit a three-run homer to give a safe lead of 9-3 to the Mets but the Reds’ offence recharged. Ramon Hernandez took an RBI single while Miguel Cairo hit a homer to Capuano’s amazement that brought the Reds back in the game with a 9-7 score.
Pedro Beato came as a reliever and gave up two hits and allowed a run to Jay Bruce, bringing the Reds back in the game, taking the score to 9-8. However, Willie Harris went against Logan Ondrusek to score an RBI single, giving the Mets a 10-8 lead.
New York Mets’ Jason Isringhausen served as the best closer to contain the Reds’ hitters, allowing only a run to Joey Votto, giving them a tremendous 10-9 win and a four-game sweep against the Reds. It will be interesting to see how the Mets carry their
winning momentum into their next series.
