New York Mets defeat Cincinnati Reds 3-0 – MLB Update
Jose Reyes added another hit to his majestic record of the season on Wednesday, September 28 to help the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 at Citi Field.
Elevating his average to .337, Reyes has a lead of two and a half over the Milwaukee Brewers’ Ryan Braun who has an average of .334.
"It was kind of tough," Reyes said. "I want to stay in the game. They have to understand, too, what's going on."
Since there is an increased competition over this title, Braun’s views were also sought. The fact that Reyes will be playing his last game in a New York Mets’ uniform makes the record all the more important.
"I'm not going to judge him," Braun said. "I respect whatever decision he decided to make and ultimately, he left the door open for me. It's not impossible. I've gotten three hits in a game plenty of times."
Pitching a shut-out with a remarkable 3.60 ERA, Miguel Batista allowed two hits and went for five strike-outs to perfect the victory for the New York Mets. Edinson Volquez had a spell of seven innings to allow three runs, giving up six hits and getting five
strike-outs with a 5.71 ERA, proving utterly costly for the team.
The win that came the Mets’ way also avoided the Reds to sweep the three-game series. "We're going to work on our areas of improvement. Getting our front-line guys back out there, stay healthy," Reds’ manager Dusty Baker said.
Edinson Volquez and Miguel Batista started a tough spell of pitching as both teams failed to score any run. With the game remaining scoreless into the fourth Nick Evans of the Mets was first to open the account.
Evans singled to centre in the 2-hit one-run fourth inning to give the team an apparently shaky lead. With the effective pitches that the Mets’ starter Miguel Batista tossed, it did not seem possible for the Reds to level the score.
Entering into the sixth, Mike Baxter hit a two-run homer to triple the lead for the New York Mets and making it increasingly difficult for the Reds to reverse the lead.
Volquez continued his effective spell and went right into the ninth inning, not allowing any run, to wrap up the game with a satisfactory 3-0 victory for the Mets, denying the Cincinnati Reds a chance to sweep the series.
The Mets put in a tremendous performance as they fought hard throughout the game to get a much needed victory over the Reds. Cincinnati will be looking to improve their efforts as the final day of the regular season is now here.
