New York Mets defeat Cincinnati Reds 8-2 – MLB Update
New York Mets were methodical in their approach as they managed to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2, in what later turned out to be a one-sided affair at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio on Wednesday, July 27.
Mike Pelfrey impressed for the Mets as he pitched his first complete game this season and was lucky to register a win. This was Pelfrey’s sixth win after nine losses already against his name. He will now want to continue with this spike in form for the rest
of the season.
The Mets’ batters also made an impact on the game as they did not allow the flow of runs to come to a halt. They kept Cincinnati's pitchers under pressure with a constant lead marked on the scorecard.
New York were not able to make an effective start after the All-Star break. They lost to Philadelphia Phillies at home and then to Florida Marlins on the road. However, they have now made a strong comeback statement with three consecutive wins against the
Cincinnati Reds on the road and will be seeking to extend this streak to four when they take on the Reds again on Thursday, July 28.
Mets opened their account at the top of the first inning with Jose Reyes and David Wright adding a run each. The Reds were able to reply to this initial lead as late as the fourth inning when Joey Votto smashed Pelfrey out of the park for his 15th
home-run this season. Votto has been unarguably the best batter for the Reds this season and he proved it with his remarkable effort on the plate in a game where no other team-mate was able to make an impact.
The only other run for the Reds came from Jay Bruce at the bottom of the seventh inning but it was an effort too late. By then, the Mets had already registered seven runs and had practically seized the game.
In the fifth inning, the Mets added two runs helped by Reyes’ second and Willie Harris’ first run of the game. Lucas Duda hammered his second home-run of the season in the sixth inning to take his career home-run tally to five. Duda’s home-run took the visitors
to a comfortable four-run lead with the score at 5-1.
David Wright provided the icing on the cake for the Mets as he rocketed a three-run homer in the seventh inning allowing Harris and Daniel Murphy to complete their runs.
Reds faced their third consecutive loss after a decent start post All-Star break. They have a tough series against the San Francisco Giants after the fourth game against the Mets. It will be vital to see how the Reds respond to this battering at home.
