New York Mets defeat Colorado Rockies 6-5 – Major League Recap
The New York Mets defeated Colorado Rockies 6-5 on their home ground at Coors Field, Denver, Colorado on Sunday, April 29 in their first three-match 2012 Major League Baseball season regular series.
With this win, the Mets also took the series 2-1.
The Rockies were sharp in the field as they fought hard against the Mets, but could not retain and more importantly could not hit in right areas despite tying the score two times.
Eleventh inning proved decisive as first basemen Ike Davis’s single to left, gave opportunity to third base David Wright to complete the winning run for the Mets.
"It was tough to see. The shadows were pretty bad at that point and the first fastball, he just blew it by me," Davis said for his plays which won the game for Mets. "I was like, 'Oh boy, got to shorten up a little bit.' I put it on the ground and I knew it had a good chance if it didn't hit anybody. It happened to find a hole."
"There were some very positive things on a day when we should have won this game a lot easier than we did," said a relieved Terry Collins, the Mets' manager, who was very happy on his team’s win.
Johan Santana also played well for the Mets and struck-out five Rockies’ hitters along with three walks and two hits. Santana was coming with a season ending 2011 injury, proved his world class calibre in this particular outing.
On the other hand, the Rockies starting rotation including Jamie Moyer also played very well, but it was not good enough for his team’s loss. He went with 11 hits and gave four runs in his five innings of play.
Now the New York Mets have bounced back at the right time giving no extra loop holes to their opponents. Scoring first three runs in the very first innings, the Mets calmly went ahead and won the game with style.
They are now sitting with quite ease preparing hard for their next three-game encounter with the Houston Astros from Tuesday, May 1.
