New York Mets defeat Florida Marlins 1-0 to win series 2-1 – MLB Update
The New York Mets inched closer to the .500 winning percentage when they beat the Florida Marlins 1-0 on Wednesday, September 7 to win the all-important third-game of the three-game series at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida.
The win gave the Mets a convincing 2-1 series victory on the road, improving their away record to 40-35 for the season so far.
Jose Reyes convinced on the plate as he went 1-for-2 and scored a run in the first inning to give the Mets a lead which eventually became the difference between both sides. Reyes’ batting average surged to .335 for the season, proving that his absence was
hard felt by the Mets. Lucas Duda drove in the only run for the Mets when he pulled Florida’s starter Brad Hand for a double down the left flank.
Hand produced a decent spell for the Marlins as he pitched six spotless-innings for just one run and three hits to improve his earned-run average to 3.91 for the season. Hand’s performance would have earned him a win on any other day but he was unlucky to
lose his sixth game of the season with just a solitary win to his credit. Hand generated 50 strikes out of a total of 93 pitches but was unlucky not to register a strike-out.
R.A. Dickey, on the other hand, pitched seven scoreless-innings to keep the pressure on the home side. He allowed just four hits in a spell which saw him throw 106 pitches to drastically improve his earned-run average to 3.47. Dickey won his eighth game
of the season but the 11 losses inflicted this season continue to loom his record.
Josh Stinson came in to relieve Dickey in the eighth inning and produced a magical spell to hold his second game of the season. He allowed just a single hit from his 17 pitches and managed 11 strikes in this stretch, striking-out a batter as well.
Manny Acosta made a strong case to be considered for a permanent job as a closer as he pitched a perfect ninth to save his first game of the season and safely guide the Mets through.
The Mets won the three-game series 2-1 after losing the first game 3-9.
