New York Mets defeat Houston Astros, 7-4 – MLB Recap
Justin Turner hit a three-run homer and knocked in a career-high five runs to lift the New York Mets to a 7-4 victory against the Houston Astros, in the rubber match of a three-game set, at Minute Maid Park on Sunday.
Jason Pridie tallied a run-scoring single and stole home for New York, which has taken three consecutive series and has won seven of 10 contests overall.
"He loves to play. Here's his chance. He has his opportunity and he's making the most of it," Mets manager Terry Collins said about Turner.
Chris Capuano (3-4) tossed five successful innings to earn the victory and halted a three-start dropping streak. The left-hander gave up six hits, two runs, struck out six and walked three. Francisco Rodriguez finished the game with a perfect ninth to earn
his 12th save of the season.
Clint Barmes scored a solo homer, while Jason Michaels doubled twice and drove in a run for the Astros, who have lost eight of their previous 11 games.
Aneury Rodriguez (0-2), making his third big-league start, was beaten for seven runs and five earned on five hits with four walks and a pair of strike-outs in five-plus frames.
The Astros took an early two point advantage, 2-0, when Chris Johnson scored an RBI single in the second inning and Michaels had run-scoring double off the centre-field fence in the fourth inning. However, New York responded with four in the fifth inning.
Daniel Murphy then singled for the Mets’ first hit of the game. Turner brought in both with a double down the left-field line and Pridie hit a brilliant go-ahead RBI single after that.
Lee was charged with an error, and with runners on the corners and two away, Jose Reyes notched second base and Pridie swiped home to put to give New York a 4-2 edge, as J.R. Towles' throw went down to second.
Bay and Murphy then came around to score on Turner's blast to left, his first career homer that put the game out of reach in the sixth inning. The Astros got one back on Barmes' solo homer against Taylor Buchholz in the bottom half to make it a 7-3 game.
Matt Downs' RBI double to centre off Jason Isringhausen pulled Houston a run closer in the eighth inning, but it could have been more. With runners still on second and third, the veteran right-hander retired Michael Bourn on a pop up and Towles on a fly
ball.
Francisco Rodriguez finally accounted for the final scoring 7-4 in the ninth inning. The Mets showed their dominance in the game, as Houston seemed to struggling throughout the game.
