New York Mets defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 6-0 for second straight night – MLB Update
The New York Mets put in a good performance as they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-0 for their second straight triumph in the four-game interleague series, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Tuesday, July 5.
The Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey had an outstanding day with the ball, as he did not allow even a single run over his six-shut-out innings. However, he gave away five hits and walked two while took out two batters to earn his fifth win of the season. He tossed
60 strikes of 102 pitches to improve his record to 5-7 with 4.64 ERA after 18 starts.
His relievers’ Pedro Beato, Jason Isringhausen and closer Daniel Carrasco each tossed one-hitter one innings to take their team into their second straight win. Beato and Carrasco each tossed 11 strikes of their 15 pitches to whitewash the opposition completely.
The Mets’ batting crushed Dodgers’ ace Ted Lilly with their devastating homers. New York led the game off with the help of a dazzling 410-feet long two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning. Then Jason Bay launched a blistering hit to left-centre for
one-run 420-feet long home-run. Bay launched another grand slam in the eighth inning for three runs to take his team into an indispensible 6-0 position.
Ted Lilly was the victim of the two of the homers, which cost him three runs on six hits over six innings. To allow two walks and getting just three strike-outs also cost Lilly his ninth loss of the season. It was his third consecutive and sixth overall
loss in last ten games.
Hong-Chih Kuo tossed ten strikes of fifteen pitches but still failed to save him from a hard-hitting bat of the Mets. He allowed only one hit over his single inning. However, the real blow was for Blake Hawksworth, who threw 11 strikes of his 15 pitches
and was optimistic about his sixth hold. He allowed two hits, one of which went for a homer that cost him two runs over his one inning spell.
However, closer Kenley Jansen managed to escape in the ninth inning but he did not receive any support from the batting line-up. The Dodgers’ twelve batters made just eight hits in combined 35 at-bats. The real surprise, only four of their batters were struck-out.
After getting four straight blows, the Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly will look forward to make a considerable change in his batting rotation. However, his hopes are now with Hiroki Kuroda, who has won his last game 5-0 against the strong Los Angeles Angels.
